About the Place
New China, located at 3350 Gravois Ave in St. Louis, stands out as a genuine gem for lovers of authentic Chinese cuisine. This no-frills, hole-in-the-wall spot offers more than just quick meals—it delivers a flavorful experience that keeps patrons coming back. The atmosphere may remind you of a busy train station ticket line rather than a traditional sit-down restaurant, but what’s inside the takeout window is where the magic happens.
The true highlight at New China lies in its well-crafted combination plates. Priced around $10, these combos typically include ham fried rice, a savory entrée of your choice, and a crisp Egg Roll or two Crab Rangoon, balancing flavor and value effortlessly. The beef and broccoli combo, praised for its rich, savory gravy, perfectly exemplifies the kitchen’s mastery of classic Chinese-American dishes. The sweet and sour chicken, a favorite among regulars, delivers nostalgia and boldness in every bite, inviting repeated orders.
Beyond the usual, New China shines in its attention to detail. The shrimp, carefully cleaned and deveined, speaks to their commitment to freshness—a rare touch that elevates the dining experience. Their strawberry smoothie is a delightful surprise, refreshing and well-crafted, complementing the savory dishes perfectly. Plus, for orders over $25, they generously include a free soda, adding extra value.
Local specialties, like the famous St. Paul’s sandwich, highlight New China’s unique place within the community’s culinary landscape. It’s an undisputed favorite, praised for its authenticity and approachable price point. The Southside version of rice dishes here offers a cultural twist worth exploring, bringing a grounded yet exciting flavor profile that few others match.
Service at New China is friendly and efficient, ensuring your food arrives fresh and fast—often in under 15 minutes. While the menu isn’t prominently updated or displayed online, the staff’s knowledge subtly guides you where to go next, inviting exploration beyond your usual order. This combined approach of simplicity, authenticity, and quality makes New China not just a place to eat, but a destination for a memorable and satisfying meal.
“ The best Chinese food I’ve had in years. I always get sweet and sour chicken combo.. Wish they had a second menu hung in the waiting area, Away from the window. I always wanna try something new but I walk to the window to look at the menu and they are immediately there like I know what to i get all ready . That’s why I’ve only gotten the one thing.. no update menu available online. But besides that, the food is fantastic. Hot and fresh. Plus they have all flavors of Faygo and Vess! ”
“ This is a hard review to determine. As far as the food goes it's excellent. One of the best Chinese places I've eaten. I've ordered pick up 5 times so far. All combination plates that cost $10 even. They come with ham fried rice, your choice of an entree, and either an Egg Roll or two Crab Rangoon. So far I've tried the beef and broccoli combo, which the gravy is beyond amazing. The only complaint I have about this dish is the broccoli both times were not cooked long enough, so the broccoli was too hard. All the combos have very large proportions and will fill you up, and even enough for two helpings with me. The second dish I tried was the ham Lo Mein combo. It was excellent and I have no complaints with it. The third dish I've tried is the sweet and sour chicken combo. I'm used to getting the chicken and sweet sour sauce separately, but this dish came with the sweet and sour sauce already dumped and soaked on the chicken nuggets. It actually was very good, even with a different spin on it then I'm used to. With all this said about the food here's where my review goes south. Every time I call to place my order the person on the phone is rude. They're also pretty rude in person. But then I realized something tonight as I was waiting in line to pick up my order. The patrons every time I've been in this restaurant have been rude and arguing with the employees over petty stuff. So, if I put myself in their shoes, I'd probably be pretty upset after 5 or 6 hours of abuse. The location of this restaurant would probably explain why the patrons are always starting trouble. It's not the safest or the best neighborhood in St Louis. I would definitely recommend eating here because their food is off the chain awesome. But, also expect to maybe wait a few minutes for the drama to unfold before you get waited on and get your food. ”
“ I walked in and placed an order. My wait was less than 15 minutes. My food came out super fresh. Their shrimp is cleaned and deveined. That’s a plus. They’re strawberry smoothie is delicious. You get a free soda on orders over $25. The lady working the counter was friendly. What more can you ask for. ”
“ This is as hole in the wall kind of place as you can imagine. It is not a sit down place. You walk inside and it’s like you’re at a train station waiting area where people line up to purchase tickets. I came here for the famous local St Paul’s sandwich. Ok legit it was awesome. And the price point was decent. I bought two for the road. I sat there way too long for a couple sandwiches as this place appears quite busy even outside of typical rush hours, and I got the sense that this place attracts some “interesting” individuals. I did not want to be in there any longer and got back in my car fast. ”
“ I moved to The Hill and oh how I've missed it here, plus it was time for me to introduce you guys to the Southside version of Northside rice lolbvs...I didn't get a pic of the 3duck necks my husband ordered, but I got this lovely Shrimp Happy Box w/Extra onion and gravy on the side!!! *UPDATE* Still the best "chinamen" in South Saint louis with the easiest way to upsell you by simply saying "WHAAAT ELSSEE" ”
